The
question:
How can you distinguish between
literal
and figurative meaning?
The answer: when we know
the
reality,
we can distinguish between
literal
and
figurative.
And
when we do not know,
we can not do it. For example:
- It
is said:
`weight
loss tablet´.
If we do not know that it reduces weight or not, we do not know that it
is
a
literal
or
a
figurative
name. When we
know
that it decreases the appetite, loss of appetite makes you eat less
and
less eating reduces the weight, we know
that
it
is
a figurative naming.
- It is said:
`airplane
without a pilot´.
When we do not know it
has
or does not have
a pilot, we do not know it
is
a
literal
or
figurative
speech.
When we
know
that it has a pilot sitting in
a
military base and leading it, we know
that
it
is
a figurative name.
That is, the airplane actually has a pilot, but because he
is
not in it, one can say in a figurative sense that it
is
without a pilot.
